Ice drift is a very important hydrometeorological characteristic, which largely determines economic activity on the coasts of the Arctic and subarctic seas. The study of the features of the ice regime, the identification of factors that determine the nature of ice drift, are of considerable practical and scientific interest. The peculiarity of the geographical position of Russia is such that in the winter period the process of ice formation is to some extent observed on all the surrounding seas.
For this reason, the collection of all available information on the characteristics of the ice regime, the study of the possibilities for forecasting ice conditions become especially relevant.
During the period February-March 2016, SDB MRAT FEB RAS staff organized monitoring of ice conditions in the Mordvinov Bay (Southeast coast of Sakhalin Island) using the FURUNO FAR-2117 high-precision radar station (RS). According to the results of measurements, a characteristic movement in the southeast direction is observed, which is confirmed by the general trend of currents in this region with an average speed of 5 cm / s. According to the full-scale measurements of the height of hummocks on drifting ice, the average height of hummocks from January to April increases from 0.5 to 1.3 meters. The maximum height of hummocks in January is 1.5 meters, reaching 5.0 meters in February-April for individual hummocks.
